This safety system uses artificial intelligence to identify workers in blind spots. It’s called Toolbox Spotter and was developed by a startup born out of Laing O’Rourke’s R&D team. They’ve just raised $4m from Main Sequence Ventures.
The system uses cameras fitted onto plant which are trained to identify workers. When workers enter the operator’s blindspot, they are alerted by a flashing light, alarm and/or a vibrating wristband.
Toolbox Spotter’s AI has been trained by watching thousands of hours of video footage to learn how to identify workers and their behaviour.
The technology could substantially reduce serious injuries from moving plant which account for over 2,000 serious injuries each year.
It has has already been adopted by major players in construction, transport and mining including TfNSW, Metro Trains Melbourne, BHP, McConnell Dowell & Georgiou Group.
