Lyrics:
In the shuffling madness
Of the locomotive breath
Runs the all time loser
Headlong to his death
Oh, he feels the piston scraping
Steam breaking on his brow
Old Charlie stole the handle
And the train, it won’t stop going
No way to slow down
Oh, oh
He sees his children jumping off
At stations one by one
His woman and his best friend
In bed an’ having fun
Oh, he’s crawling down the corridor
On his hands and knees
Old Charlie stole the handle
And the train, it won’t stop going
No way to slow down
Yeah, yeah
He hears the silence howling
And catches angels as they fall
And the all time winner
Has got him by the balls
Oh, he picks up Gideon’s Bible
Open at page one
I thank God, he stole the handle
And the train, it won’t stop going
No way to slow down
No way to slow down
No way to slow down
No way to slow down
No way to slow down
No way to slow down

Blackie Lawless turned this song into a great song. With no flutes. Flutes are NOT rock.
rockin the flute and making it cool. Ian Anderson.
I can see the smoke and taste the cheap beer. Love it.

I haven't read any comments on how kick ass Martin Barre's guitar is in this song. It's what drives this music. Listen to his licks after each sentence in the first verse. Seriously powerful chords that give this song that edge.

A ripper! Tull was quite unique-and always one of the best acts you'll ever see-especially in '72.
Yep, Ron Burgundy's bringin' back the flute.
there's a story how this song came about, look it up, interesting..

Happy Birthday today(July 30) to Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond. Cheers!
I love the piano intro.
He's incredible
The piano. Then the piano and the lead guitar. And all hell breaks loose. And then the flute solo with Ian gasping for breath. It's all too much!
2018?
asshole with his flute , no one likes this shit outside of a bar now anyway , another time that sucked
dang charlie
FLUTE SOLO
This album introduced me to Tull-even though they had some great work already out. This album brought them into the conscience of American youth.
"all-time loser"-vintage lyric.
