The whole God Damn country is safety nuts. All the signs, yellow vests, 456 flashing lights on a forklift, training videos, and Barney Fife wannabe security guards is not going to prevent that freak accident. That's why they are called….accidents. They happen no matter how much bubble wrap we shove up our ass.
Look at it from a soldiers perspective. The helmet, the armor, the ballistic shades to the boots which is probably sturdier that what I wore in the Army.
Will all that stop you from getting shot? An IED exploding in your face?
The answer is no, a soldier trains and maintains their gear so if something catastrophic happens, maybe he or she will avoid all the harm pro actively because wearing the gear means nothing if you do not know what you are doing.
You've injured yourself on the jobsite HOW many times? And you think you are qualified to tell me not to put such a high priority on safety? Stay the hell out of my shop, you and your attitude are dangerous.
As someone who has worked in the energy industry for many years I can tell you that all of these safety programs, protocols, rules, and regulations have one primary purpose, and it is NOT the wellbeing of the worker. It is nothing more than a way to eliminate the companies legal liabilities should an employee get hurt at work.
The first thing a company will do in the event of an accident is point out that the employee was trained and warned about safety and was somehow not following the safety rules and regulations. Therefore they are solely at fault for their own injuries.
I have seen the scenario play out many times.
Think about safety officers…a safety officer will talk a big game about caring for the workers safety but when an accident occurs they never stand up to the company but rather become company apologists who attempt to shift all of the blame onto the injured or dead party. They know who signs their paycheck…
This is spot on. My last job loved to say it every chance they got. But in the end nobody cared and they only used safety as a buzz word or an excuse to fire someone.

Mike is right, you gotta watch your own back!
If safety was really the top priority we wouldn't be crab fishing at all. Hell, we wouldn't be doing a lot of things…
