The OSHA 10 Hour Construction Industry Outreach Training Course is intended to provide an entry level construction worker’s general awareness on recognizing and preventing hazards on a construction site.
The course covers 10 hours of vital construction industry topics as required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), which will count towards your receipt of OSHA’s Outreach Training 10-Hour Construction Industry Course Completion Card. This section explains course requirements, reference materials, a general introduction and nine topic-specific modules. The regulations referenced and covered in the article are all covered by Standard 29 CFR 1926. Successful completion of the course will help you meet the construction industry standards mandated by OSHA.

Course Modules

The OSHA 10-hour course consists of 12 modules that cover important OSHA safety topics. During the course, you’ll learn the basics about OSHA safety requirements in these categories:

  1. Introduction – This lesson introduces the OSHA 10 Safety Training course.
  2. Electrical Safety – Learn what electrical injuries are and how to avoid them; how to recognize the warning signs that an electrical hazard may exist, and more
  3. Fall Protection – This lesson covers the essentials for avoiding injuries from falls.
  4. Struck-By Accidents & Caught-Between Accidents – Struck-by and caughtbetween accidents are major causes of injuries and fatalities on construction worksites.
  5. Personal Protective Equipment – Essential knowledge for protecting all the parts of your body, from the proper helmet to the best shoes or boots.
  6. Scaffolds – How to safely construct, deconstruct, and use building scaffolds to support workers and materials safely.
  7. Cranes & Other Hoists – A primer on one of the most dangerous categories of construction equipment on any project.
  8. Hand & Power Tools – Learn to avoid shocks, accidents, and injury to yourself and others by learning about the parts of your tool and the safeguards you may need to take.
  9. Excavations – Avoiding cave-ins, techniques for proper shoring and more.
  10. Materials Handling & Storage – The efficient handling and storage of construction materials is vital to the industry and to your safety.
  11. Demolition – Naturally, it’s important to take extreme precautions when you’re using explosives or other means to demolish a structure. Learn the basics here!
  12.  Hazards in Communication, Occupational Noise, and Silica – The Prescription for Poison Control? Familiarizing yourself with the HAZCOM – OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard. This module helps you do that. Plus, you’ll look at noise exposure and silica.

How to Earn Your OSHA 10 Construction Industry Card

In order to earn your OSHA 10 Construction Industry Card, you must meet all of the following reguirements:

  1. Spend the required time and complete each of the 12 course modules.
  2. Complete the program within 6 months.
  3. Pass all quizzes and the final exam in no more than three attempts. If you fail any after three attempts you will be locked out and you will have to complete a new OSHA 10 program.
  4. Achieve a passing grade of 70% for all quizzes and the final exam.

Online OSHA 10 Time Limits

OSHA has set a required six month time limit for completing the program.
If you have not completed the course within six months, you will be locked out of the course and required to sign-up again and start from the beginning if you wish to receive your card.
OSHA requires that the course set the pace of the learning and that students spend adequate time on each screen. This is accomplished by the course in two ways:

  • You must spend at least 15 seconds on each slide within the module before moving on to the next slide. The time spent on each slide is saved between sessions. If you close out of the course module and return, you will not be required to spend 15 seconds on slides you have already viewed.
  • Each module has a set amount of total time the student must spend in that module before it will be marked complete, so don’t rush.

If you reach the end of a module and have not met this required time, the course will let you know. If this happens, we recommend you return to any chapter within the module you feel you could spend more time on to more fully absorb the material. You may also want to navigate through to the checkpoints and practice answering these exercises again. This re-review of the material will help to ensure you pass the module quiz and the final exam within three attempts as required by OSHA.

Post-Module Quizzes

A quiz follows each module. OSHA requires that you pass each of these quizzes with a score of 70% in order to advance to the next module.
OSHA also restricts you to a total of three attempts to pass each quiz. You can go back and review the material after each attempt.
Per OSHA rules, if you have still not passed the quiz after the third attempt, you will be marked as “failed” and you will have to take a new OSHA 10 program.

Final Exam

Once you have finished reading all the course materials and have passed the quiz at the end of each module, you will need to pass a 25-question final exam. You are required to score a minimum of 70% to pass the exam.
It is important to note that the 25 exam questions pull from a larger pool of questions and are displayed in a random order. That means you may notice different questions, in a different order, if you must make additional attempts to pass the final exam.
OSHA restricts you to three attempts to pass the final exam. You may go back and review the material after the attempts.
Per OSHA rules, if you still have not passed the exam after the third attempt, you will be locked out and will have to complete a new OSHA 10 program.

Receiving Your OSHA 10 Card

Once you passed the final exam, the required documents are submitted to OSHA by your training provider. It may take up to six weeks for the cards to arrive to your training provider. After that the card is mailed to you by the training provider. Be patient and allow time for these steps to take place.

Electronic Certificate of Completion

You will also be able to download and print a certificate of completion from the training provider. The electronic certificate is not your official document; it is provided only as proof that you took the course until you get your official OSHA 10 completion card in the mail. However, the certificate may be acceptable by your requiring authority for allowing you on the jobsite before your OSHA 10 student completion card arrives. Check with your requiring authority to find out if this is the case or not.

Conclusion

To receive your student completion card, you must do ALL of the following based on OSHA criteria:

  • Spend a minimum of 10 hours to complete each of the 12 course modules but in reality it will take you much more time to learn the material.
  • Complete the program within 6 months.
  • Pass all quizzes and the final exam in three attempts. If you fail any after three attempts you will be locked out and you will have to complete a new OSHA 10 program.
