In which John Green teaches you about the rise of the conservative movement in United States politics. So, the sixties are often remembered for the liberal changes that the decade brought to America, but lest you forget, Richard Nixon was elected to the presidency during the sixties. The conservative movement didn’t start with Nixon though. Modern conservatism really entered mainstream consciousness during the 1964 presidential contest between incumbent president and Kennedy torch-bearer Lyndon B Johnson, and Republican senator Barry Goldwater. While Goldwater never had a shot in the election, he used the campaign to talk about all kinds of conservative ideas. At the same time, several varying groups, including libertarian conservatives and moral conservatives, began to work together. Goldwater’s trailblazing and coalition building would pay off in 1968 when Richard Nixon was elected to the White House, and politics changed forever when Nixon resigned over the Watergate scandal. You’ll also learn about the ERA, , EPA, OSHA, the NTSB, and several other acronyms and initialisms.

Alabama sent a Democrat to the senate lmao
ARRROOOOOOO! Nixon's back, baby
Alamba elected a democrat this year, riddle me that john
Conservatism is an individualist (right wing) ideology that is about protecting the constitution and keeping government small. As opposed to the collectivist side (left wing) which would be progressives or farther down would be socialists. There, saved you some time
Religion and Economics were the reasons the South left the democratic party
Why would we correlate crime to African Americans….. hmmmm…. let me think…hmmmmm…..anyone?….anyone?…hmmm.
You make conservatives look bad
John Green: Do you literally know everything? All these videos of yours make me think that you are literally an expert on everything. Nice. Until the computers become sentient, we need a few people who know everything. Keep up the good work, John.
Election manipulation, paranoid president trying to stop leaks and more
did I see that somewhere else?!
There has never been a liberal democrat.
This video has some blatant inaccuracies in it like LBJ and the Democratic Party in the 1960s where the party is at fault for civil rights is wrong beyond measure without Republicans in the Congress it would never would have passed
Sexual revolution i really dont see anything bad about that at all.
The "Southern Strategy" has debunked several times. The Republican party was formed because there was no political party that denounced slavery. MLK was a Republican. Abe Lincoln was a Republican. George Wallace was a Democrat that famously said, "Segregation now, segregation tomorrow and segregation forever". He also blocked the door to the University of Alabama to stop black students from entering. The Confederate States' congress was full of former Democrats.
Go to PragerU channel and watch their videos about the Southern Strategy and historical Democrats. Also watch Dinesh D'Souza.
This is so boring and not fun at all. Didn't laugh once…
Alabama elected a Democrat. 🙂
After Strom Thurman in 48 the more racist politicians shifted to the Republican party. The liberals were republicans prior to 48. Now the majority are science denying, religious fundamentalist, just look at the election last week. Roy Moore was literally a child molester and he still nearly won. Lucky for Alabama he lost maybe now they'll get bumped up out the last spot in education. Considering they are rated absolute poorest educated state in the union.
It's the end of 2017. Glad this came up in my YouTube feed.
I think John is wrong on the main reason the ERA failed. My understanding is that the ERA would have meant women would have had to join the draft, which is not popular among liberals or conservatives
"This machine kills fascists" is labeled on the laptop lol
Great vid, yet again! However, I think it's a bit of a stretch confabulating big government programs with Nixon's abuse of power.
Gotta love Alabama. One of the only nice places to be is Huntsville, an awkward mix of rednecks and engineers.
There is Cons and Libs fighting in the comments but I am a LEFTIEST
his computer says (this machine kills facists)!
